Executive Summary

Asian markets are feeling the heat of rising prices this summer. In response, governments and central banks across the region are moving swiftly to implement cooling measures. Most APAC central banks have raised their benchmark interest rates by varying degrees in the past month and are likely to hike rates further this year.

Governments in Japan, Southeast Asia, India, and South Korea have also implemented fuel tax cuts and cash handouts to support companies and consumers during this period of rising prices. However, some government moves will also be disruptive to the global supply of essential commodities, such as China’s harsh COVID lockdowns, India’s limits on wheat and sugar exports, and Indonesia’s policy flip-flop on palm oil exports.
